Shaping the future of creative industries in Lamu

On 30th March in Nairobi, a roundtable was held at the World Bank premises, organised with Ms Elizabeth Kibaki and Mr Isfandyar Zaman Khan, to present and discuss the early findings of the ongoing work on the Creative and Cultural Industries in Lamu County. The meeting brought together representatives from key national institutions and private sector organisations, including the State Department for Culture and Heritage, Kenya Tourism Board, Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency, National Museums of Kenya, Invest Kenya, the American Chamber of Commerce, and policy research institutions.

The roundtable was organised within the framework of the “Lamu Creative and Cultural Industries: Technical Assistance for Strategic Framework and Reform” project, under the CreatiFI Programme implemented by the World Bank through the C-JET and F4D trust funds funded by the European Commission. The initiative aims to support the development of a more structured, inclusive and sustainable creative economy in Lamu, strengthening its contribution to local development and cultural heritage valorisation.

This exchange took place at the conclusion of a field mission in Lamu Island, Kenya, combining site visits and stakeholder engagement activities. Over several days, our team, comprising Raffaele Gorjux (Team Leader), Simon Woodward (Cultural Expert), Awadh Salim (Community Engagement and MSME Development Specialist), Giulia Gorjux (Technical Coordinator) and Alice Durì (Project Manager), explored key locations and held dedicated workshops with representatives of the creative and cultural industries as well as tourism stakeholders.
